video day

Joan Jonas- the 1st film was weird and i really didn't get the message. i didn't understand the meares??

Gary Hill- the 2nd film shows a movie but in frames. starts fast and slowly... i mean very slowly comes to
a stop. it focuses on a man and his face is dreary at 1st then becomes more and more happy.
personally i didn't care for the film, but it had a solid message...  slow down and see whats around
                you.

Piplotti Rist- the 3rd film was trip en me out! in the film she kept saying "you see what i see!" and i defiantly
got a sense of how/what she saw. she was on some kinda drug cuz that's not normal to see.

Bill Viola- the 4th film starts out with a fish swimming though the air. then dives though the trees. now the fly's
get at the fish. a deer says what up to the decomposing fish. along with some birds. and slowly the
fish fads out of the pic.

JamesLuna: Identity

James Luna is known for pushing boundaries in his installations, where he engages audiences by making himself part of a tableau. James Luna is a Luiseno Indian who lives on the La Jolla Indian Reservation.  Luna has stated that "art work in the media of performance and installation offers an opportunity like no other for Native people to express themselves without compromise in the Indian traditional art forms of ceremony, dance, oral traditions and contemporary thought.  "His installations have been described as transforming gallery spaces into battlefields, where the audience is confronted with the nature of cultural identity, and tensions generated by cultural isolation, and dangers of cultural misinterpretation- all from a Native perspective." Said by,  Walter Phillips.  I think he addresses the mythology of what it means to be “Indian” in contemporary American society and exposes the hypocrisy of the dominant society.

Beauty???

Beauty...  what do we as a society perceive as beautiful? I really thought that the dove video we saw in class hit the nail on the head. Are view of beauty is distorted by all these images of what is beautiful and what is not. I thought this was a new thing and in the past they didn't have to worry about self image, but nope it was just as bad as it is now. Except back then they had to aspire to the beauty of the GOD'S...  yeah i know talk about setting the bar high. There were the few that didn't necessary think this was true like Aristotle he believed in real objects like art. Keats believed that beauty was all we need to know. And thouse are good ideas be i like the old saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" it's kinda corny but true.

Lady Pink "Graffiti Artist"

Lady Pink was born in Sandra Fabara, Ambato, Ecuador, 1964. Came to the states and grue up in  Queens, New York. One of Americas biggest graffiti writing city's. Lady pink could have seen the men around her abuse and/or put down the women in her life, this could be a big reason why in a most of her paintings she looks to empower women.

Lady pink started doing graffiti in 1979, and soon was well known as the only female graffiti capable of competing with men in the graffiti subculture. The first subway car she bombed was at age 16 and did it to prove to the boy's she was for real, and after that she became hooked.

Her artistic ability progressed rapidly, gaining her respect and admiration from within the graffiti community. To some she is considered a cult figure in the Graffiti culture. Manly for her unique and rather feminine art piece's that seem to captor the beauty and imagination of New York women. As a leading participant in the rise of graffiti-based art, Lady Pink's canvases have entered important art collections such as those of the Whitney Museum, the MET in New York City, the Brooklyn Museum and the Groningen Museum of Holland.  Lady Pink's paintings are highly prized by collectors.

Lady Pink now runs her own mural paintings company with her husband Smith, creating massive works around New York City, this is one of the few professional teams to originate from the graffiti subculture. Lady pink has been a inspiration and role model to young females all over the world.
